Former US president Barack Obama stopped smoking and never went back to it for the fear of his wife.
In an exclusive interview with Politico Magazine titled, ‘John Boehner Unchained’, the former House Speaker spoke on his entire 25-year career with the Republican Party in Washington.
He also spoke on his relationship with former US President, Barack Obama, during which he may have spilled some beans on why the former president quit cigarette smoking. He narrated an incident during a 2011 meeting between himself and the former U.S President during which, as he says, “I’m smoking a cigarette, and they bring me a glass of Merlot. And we’re sitting there a little while, and here’s the president drinking iced tea and chomping on Nicorette.”
Nicorette is a substance that comes in patch, pill or gum form that is used to stop the cravings for the nicotine in cigarettes, and is supposed to be used only two weeks after one stops smoking. Going by this fact, it could be assumed that Barack Obama backslid and went back to smoking for a while after his wife, Michelle Obama, in February 2011 announced to the world that her husband had given up smoking.
However, on being asked whether he ever saw Barack Obama smoking a cigarette during his time at the White House, John Boehner said, “Oh no. No no no. He’s scared to death of his wife. Scared. To. Death.”
