Coal a combustible sedimentary rock composed of carbon and hydrocarbon. Coal a fossil fuel that develops when dead plant matter transformed into peat, lignite, then bituminous Coal, and last Anthracite. This involves biological and Geological processes that take place over time due to temperature and pressure variations. Coal grade increase with increase of Energy, thus Anthracite the highest grade considered with great Energy source.
Coal used as an Energy source, either for heat or electricity. Bituminous used to produce coke for producing steel and other industrial heating.
Coal in Tanzania deposited in Karoo Basins
According to Dr Charles Kaaya (sedimentary geologist, from university of Dar es Salaam), The Karoo rocks in Tanzania are of late Carboniferous to Mid Jurassic age. They preserved in several isolated faulted Basins in the Precambrian Basement. Karoo Basins classified into Inland Basins and the Coastal Karoo Basins. Coal discovered in Inland Karoo Basins. It occurs in K2 in Ruhuhu, Songwe-Kiwira, Njuga, Mbamba Bay, Galula, Namwele-Mkomolo and Muze. In K4 Coal of commercial quantity and quality discovered in Mhukuru only. No Coal has found in Coastal Karoo because the oldest exposed rocks are of K3 and younger.
In recent Geological expedition by Geologist D Mpanda, anthracite Coal outcrop found in Likonde Plateau of Nangalu village just 15Kilometer from Lindi town Region. Likonde Plateau is within Coastal basin of Mandawa. This is new promise for high grade quality Coal deposit in Tanzania since the Coals from Inland Basins are of bituminous grade Mr. Mpanda said.
Tanzania now has Coal reserves of up to 5 billion tonne and produces Coal from two mines. Tancoal Energy runs Tanzania’s Ngaka Coal project, while Tanzania’s mine at Kiwira run by the state. This Coal used for domestic use and power generation. But productions from two mines are very small to satisfy the needs of the Region.
Coal Market in East and Central Africa is growth due to industrialization manufacturing and a choice to poor electricity supply in Region. Portland cement, gypsum power and lime manufacturer, ceramics production, breweries and soft drinks manufacturer, roofing sheet and steels industry are developing in the Region but are considering Coal as source of Energy.
The late 2016 restriction of Coal Import by Dr John Pombe Magufuli, the president of Tanzania increased the needs of mechanised Coal mining in which the present production not meeting the demands of the industry in the Region but this opportunity to medium sized miner to grow with the industry.
